I was talking about the coaching process with my Coaching Supervisor. we were discussing the implicit power-relationship in coaching (Expert - Novice) and how we could work with any positive aspects of that and reduce any negative aspects.
I wondered if it was useful to think of the coaching process as a form of mutual learning - or indeed as a form of mutual knowledge creation…

the concept of coaching as a form of knowledge creation is nothing new. Nonaka and Takeuchi (1995) integrate it into a SECI model particularly in internalization process.

How about the following as a speculative response?
Perhaps if neither considers him/herself more expert. Both would have to Thou (as in Buber’s I/Thou) the other. In a relationship in which there is a perceived power differential it is hard (very difficult–>impossible?) for the individual with less perceived power to Thou the individual with more perceived power.
Think of it as a relationship that is conceived in friendship and directed at the better realization of each. If each brings really good listening skills and an ability, further, to accept another in full — each would be enriched and the net knowledge (and sense of completion) might well grow.
