!Reflection before Action
Bob Dick in ref 1 identifies these questions for
reflection before action
{BOX(title=>Reflection Before Action)}
What do I think are the salient features of the situation that I face? (1a)
Why do I think those are the salient features? What evidence do I have for this belief? (1b)
If I am correct about the situation, what outcomes do I believe are desirable? (2a)
Why do I think those outcomes are desirable in that situation? 2b)
If I am correct about the situation and the desirability of the outcomes, what actions do I think will give me the outcomes? (3a)
Why do I think those actions will deliver those outcomes in that situation? (3b)
{BOX}
I think it's useful to break down the areas these questions are looking at - three aspects of the situation on two different levels:

So already we are into a
double loop of planning.
I'll use the label
Reflection 1 for this part of the process
!Reflection after Action
Bob Dick in ref 1 identifies these questions for
reflection after action
{BOX(title=>Reflection After Action)}
Did I get the outcomes that I want?
Or, more realistically, what were the outcomes that I got, and how well do these accord with those I sought?
To the extent that I got them, do I still want them? Why, or why not?
To the extent that I didn't get them, why not?
In what ways was I mistaken about the situation? (1a)
Which of my assumptions about the situation misled me? (1b)
f
What have I learned? What different conclusions will I reach about similar situations in future? (1c)
In what ways was I mistaken about the desirability of the pursued outcomes? (2a)
Which of my reasons for favouring those outcomes misled me? (2b)
What have I learned? What outcomes will I try to pursue when next I'm in such a situation? (2c)
Did I succeed in carrying out the planned actions? If not, what prevented or discouraged me? What have I learned about myself, my skills, my attitudes, and so on? (3a)
If I did carry out the actions, in what ways was I mistaken about the effect they would have? Which of my assumptions about the actions misled me? (3b)
What have I learned? What actions will I try next time I am pursuing similar outcomes in a similar situation? (3c)
{BOX}
These questions direct thought towards both the process and the mental models in use with a combination of
reflection and
generative improvement:
!!Process
Observation
Did I get the outcomes that I want?
Or, more realistically, what were the outcomes that I got, and how well do these accord with those I sought?
Learning about implementation
Did I succeed in carrying out the planned actions?
If not, what prevented or discouraged me?
What have I learned about myself, my skills, my attitudes, and so on?
!!Mental Models
Accuracy of mental models used for observation
In what ways was I mistaken about the situation?
Which of my assumptions about the situation misled me?
What have I learned?
What different conclusions will I reach about similar situations in future?
Accuracy of mental models used for goal-setting
To the extent that I got them (the desired outcomes), do I still want them? Why, or why not?
In what ways was I mistaken about the desirability of the pursued outcomes?
Which of my reasons for favouring those outcomes misled me?
What have I learned?
What outcomes will I try to pursue when next I'm in such a situation?
Accuracy of mental models used for planning
To the extent that I didn't get them (the desired outcomes), why not?
If I did carry out the actions, in what ways was I mistaken about the effect they would have?
Which of my assumptions about the actions misled me?
What have I learned?
What actions will I try next time I am pursuing similar outcomes in a similar situation?
I'll use the label
Reflection 2 for this part of the process
!Combined cycle
Combining these two parts of the approach seems to give rise to an interesting modification of the
KolbLearningCycle :
