!!The Ladder of Inference
!Introduction
This phrase was coined by [Chris Argyris] to describe the way in which people tend to:
* Selectively filter and distort experience based on strongly-held beliefs
* Generalise from experience to meanings
* Crystallise meanings into beliefs
* Take actions based on those beliefs
This is a self-reinforcing model because of the [Reflexive Loop] by which beliefs affect what we notice which in turn affects our beliefs...
The same underlying model is expressed in slightly different terms both in the [NLP Model of Cognition] and in [Neuro-Semantics]
!Using the Ladder of Inference
In [The Fifth Discipline Fieldbook] Rick Ross suggests that an understanding of the Ladder Od Inference can be used in three ways:
# Reflection: becoming more aware of your own thinking and reasoning
# Advocacy: making your own thinking and reasoning more visible to others
# Inquiry: inquiring into others' thinking and reasoning.
It seems to me that for all of these the NLP technique of the MetaModel would be useful...
