!!Perceptual Positions

NLP uses the term Perceptual Positions to describe the mental "point of view" in operation at any given time.

First Position is your normal self - in this position you would tend to use words in the first person, be [AssociationDisassociation "associated"] into your experience, feeling all your normal emotions.

Second Position means to take the point of view of the other person in the interaction - to imagine how they are feeling, what they would say.

Third Position (also known as Meta Position ) is to take the point of view of a detached observer of the interaction.

Fourth Position . An additional categorisation introduced by Robert Dilts and Judith Delozier implying a broader systemic view of what is happening.

!NLP techniques that use Perceptual Positions

The simplest technique that encourages a client to adopt multiple perspectives on an issue is simply to ask questions - such as "if you were in the other person 's position, what would you feel about this situation"

Other techniques that more explictly involve multiple perceptual positions:

* MetaMirror
