Used in several senses in NeuroLinguisticProgramming - in general as a way of referring to a spatial metaphor for events through time.
# As an expression of a person's normal spatial metaphor for time, expressed in a visualised form. The imaginary line (not necessarily straight) running from the spatial location in which they encode the past, through their location for the present and extending to the location in which they encode the future. See Through Time and In Time.
# In [TimeLineTherapy "TimeLine Therapy"] the term is applied to an internal representation of time in the metaphoric form of a line. To aid [pacing "pacing"] in the light [HypnoticInduction "hypnotic induction"] that is used in the technique, the recommended approach is to use language which addresses visual, aural and kinesthetic modalities.
# As a form of spatial [Anchoring "anchoring"] for events in the past or future. Used in many NLP patterns this technique maps locations in time to physical locations in the room. Often the person using the technique will move (or be directed to move) along the line to stimulate unconscious (re)processing of past or future events. Another use of the metaphor is to encourage fast [Disassociation "disassociation"] from events by "stepping off the line".
